Welcome to the Voices Of Promise blog, the official North Hartford Promise Zone blog. This blog is a voice for the people and happenings in North Hartford.

On April 28, 2015 the City of Hartford was awarded a Promise Zone designation by the Obama Administration for North Hartford – a 3.11 square-mile area encompassing the Clay Arsenal, Northeast and Upper Albany neighborhoods. The initiative forms a partnership between the federal government and local leaders, in which they work together to advance neighborhood revitalization and create a safe prosperous future for neighborhood residents.

As part of the ongoing efforts, the six identified goals are to create jobs, increase economic activity, reduce serious and violent crime, improve educational opportunities, improve health and wellness, and to improve home ownership and rental housing assistance programs.

With the Promise Zone designation, tools are received to accelerate revitalization efforts, including:

  • An opportunity to engage five AmeriCorps VISTA members in the Promise Zone’s work
  • A federal liaison assigned to help designees navigate federal programs
  • Preferences for certain competitive federal grant program and technical assistance from participating federal agencies
